We’re going from computers with cameras, that take photos, to computers with eyes, that can see.
People are beginning to recognize that Snapchat is actually an AR platform cloaking itself as a messaging app. It's definitely one of the first mobile-native behemoths in the world and fits perfectly with the idea that the most interesting place to be is no longer in front of a computer, it's to go out into the world with a computer in your hand (Ben Thompson). What happens when spend more money on our Snapchat avatars than ourselves?
Usain isn't the only lighting bolt at the Olympics. BuzzFeed's Snapchat channel has to be lighting quick in production, since they generally wait as long as they can for the top stories to unfold before them. The staffers thrive by being nimble, creative and all-purpose publishers.
Back in June, Steve Burke described what he called his Olympics “nightmare.”
NBC thought they could bend time in their own favor, but were no match for the omnipresent super computer. Let's hope it doesn't take another 4 years for executives to realize that people are carrying around televisions in their pocket and how this new framework has second order effects on advertising.
